A Salute to Coco Martin

The movie "Noy" will be showing in theaters here and abroad. I guess it is one of the best things that came out of this elections. It gives us the experience of what has been the past struggle and yet prepares us for what is yet to come...

A rare filipino talent in the person of Coco Martin plays a three-fold role in this upcoming film -the lead star, the producer, and the director. He says it was supposed to be a documentary of top presidential bet Noynoy Aquino's campaign trail for the 2010 Elections until ideas poured out from friends making it into an "indie" film. For more information about this movie just click on  http://www.noythemovie.com/

The movie itself is historical, very timely and at the same time reflects reality but the guy himself behind the making of it is the most exceptional if not one of the best artist of this generation. Guess i was not much of the fan before... but now I am.

Noy-Mar tandem

It seemed like a long time since that May 2010 elections... Still the country awaits for the official announcement and proclamation of winners in the president and vice presidential race. Liberal Party supporters of  Noynoy and Mar Roxas  are still hoping their tandem makes it to the finish line as they continue to lead the NBOC(National Board of Canvassers) official canvass... The citizens did their part but then  it shows the road is still long...

I thought it was done but the political "blurr" goes on. For now I can do nothing but still hope everything happens for the best interest of the whole nation...

Beautiful flower underneath the sun

Stumbled upon the sight of a rose in perfect bloom just this afternoon at my mama's little garden... Guess roses love the the heat of the summer sun for as long as it also gets watered everyday... While my skin is already growing red things due to the intolerable heat and the dam which supplies water to our city is nearly out of water... Well, I suppose God always manage to give us something else in exchange for another... Better be counting our blessings...

A pair of new slippers...

Does it fit? Now... the sight of it make me laugh, though i must admit it still look good on me. I did'nt buy it for my myself, that is why it doesn't fit. I bought it for my mama, unfortunately she doesn't like the feel of it. Make her legs all the more painful, so that i got no choice but take it as mine... more laughter. Anyways it looks good on me wearing jeans... hehe! coz i'm fund of wearing bell-bottomed ones so it doesn't show the back or the soles. Still got some funny feeling looking at it but it felt good on my foot.
Many thanks for the new slippers, ma!!!

"Thank you" is a miraculous expression. We feel good when we say it, and we feel good when we hear it. When we speak or hear the words thank you, the armor falls from our hearts and we communicate on the deepest level.

I was never allowed coffee by my parents during my elementary and high school days. Surprised to learn my grade six pupils say they do drink coffee every morning.   But somewhere in my my working years I somehow needed it to stay awake for longer hours. Now, I think I am a coffee addict...

choco tips

Shoot for 70% and higher. The percentage refers to the amount of cocoa solids in the product. The more cocoa, the more flavonoids, polyphenol compounds also found in apples, green tea, and red wine (though one study found that chocolate beats them in health power, hands down).

Chocolate's flavonoids can block changes to cholesterol that makes it more likely to stick to your arteries, and the compounds may help protect your DNA from the damage that can cause cancer.

It's also likely that they improve the health of your blood vessels, increase blood flow, and make you smarter. It even helps put rats in a good mood, and fruit flies live longer, though those studies may or may not be applicable to humans (we think the mood one does work, if you test our brides).

Notice that we said the more cocoa, the more flavonoids, not the more chocolate you eat, the more flavonoids you get . . . stick to an ounce or so a day to avoid dark chocolate's dark side: calories.

In order to overcome our prejudices, we must constantly strive to develop the habit of looking at ourselves from the point of view of others. Realizing that all people have both good points and bad, in the end the important thing is to strive to combat our own inner obstinacy and narrow-mindedness.

tips for healthy eating habits

1. Eat when you're hungry. And eat often, so you're never famished. But have your last meal at least three hours before bed.
2. Change your plates. Switch to 9-inch plates for meals, not the usual 11- or 13-inch variety. Smaller plates = smaller portions.
3. Eat these every day:
  1. Nine handfuls, total, of fruits and vegetables
  2. At least 1 ounce of nuts (a small handful)
  3. High fiber whole-grain bread or cereal, especially in the morning

4. Eat fish at least 3 times a week ideally salmon, mahi mahi, tilapia, catfish, or flounder.
5. Be a hot tomato. Eat at least 10 tablespoons of cooked tomato products (ketchup, marinara sauce) a week for a healthy dose of the antioxidant lycopene, which can decrease the risk of prostate and other cancers.
6. Avoid these like a hot potato:
  1. Anything that contains trans and/or saturated fats
  2. White foods -- white bread, white rice, white pasta, creamy sauces -- white tends to go with foods that are highly processed, high fat, or both
  3. Products that list simple sugars, including high fructose corn syrup (HFCS), in the first few ingredients; they put your blood sugar on a roller coaster that makes you crave high-calorie foods

7. Before you eat, drink. Have one or two glasses of water before every meal to help fill you up.
8. Take daily:
  1. Vitamins and minerals that contain at least 800 micrograms of folate, 400 international units of vitamin D, 1,200 milligrams of calcium, and 400 milligrams of magnesium. For more recommended daily amounts, click here.
  2. If you don't eat fish, an omega-3 supplement that contains 2 grams of these heart-healthy fatty acids.

senior citizen...

A number of them flooded our voting precincts... Seeing them struggle with what was left of their strengths to cast their vote the whole morning amidst the maddening crowd of people waiting outside reminded me so much of my own mother.

I did not let her vote since she was here with us for a vacation and she was registered in our province. My 71 year old  mama is suffering from highblood pressure, arthritis and kept on complaining about the pain.  She gets easily irritated and has her mood swings... I guess it's all part of growing old. Aside from that i think she doesn't look her age and I thank god she's still with us.

sleep...

Arrived in broad daylight from the previous day's escapade
Lost appetite for any food at all
So tired and worn out, my body ached
Ached for nothing else but sleep

A bit rested..
Woke up somewhere at noon
My body felt the pain for hunger
And so i did get some lunch

Then... i slept again
'Till dawn
Still feeling the pain
But glad i survived the ordeal

I just thought... when the body gets most tired
Oh dearest... child
Nothing else comes the sweetest
Than sleep and rest... waking up feeling the fairest

longest day...

The day has come... woke up 2am... last minute preparations of election materials... ate breakfast... and started my ordeal.

It was a beautiful morning. Everything was in order until the voters arrived and we had a hard time accommodating all of them. They had to wait in line and some got the limit for their patience. The sun was too hot, the line was too long, and some did not take their meals. Senior citizens got to vote first and there were a number of them, not to mention they took longer time so that it made the others sacrifice all the more thereby causing some chaos among them and the more pressure to us election officers.

Lunchbreak for us came 2pm while dinner for the day was 9pm and continued with the job until the last person casted the vote. We were able to go home the next daybreak, as usual.

It was the longest day of our life. Now it's time for everyone to move on. I just hope our sacrifices will be worth the next years to come...

my vote goes to....

It's Sunday once again...  I got to go out early today to prepare for tomorrow's election... call of duty you know. I am excited of the outcome despite the odds. Hope everything turns out well.

My vote goes to  the Liberal Party candidates. I had second thoughts for a while... There are so many candidates making it so hard to choose. Finally got myself some peace of mind. I believe Noynoy Aquino to be the most competent among the choices and most probably has the purest intentions for this country. But it doesn't mean the responsibility all goes out to him if he wins. Hope each one of us will do our share and carry on with our duties as good citizens of  this country.

Tomorrow we get to choose our leaders, therefore the future of every Filipino lies in our hands. Let us not be selfish and waste this chance to be responsible voters. Fellow countrymen the best of luck...  May God Bless Us All with a peaceful, honest and successful election !!!

1.   To prepare cherry sauce: Combine cherries, water, honey, cornstarch, lemon juice, and vanilla extract in a small saucepan. Bring to a boil over medium heat and cook, stirring occasionally, until the mixture thickens, about 1 minute. Set aside.
2.   To prepare waffles: Preheat oven to 200°F; place a large baking sheet on the center rack.
3.   Whisk whole-wheat flour (see measuring tip), cornmeal, baking powder, baking soda, and salt in a large bowl. Lightly beat eggs and brown sugar in a medium bowl. Add buttermilk, oil, and vanilla; whisk until well blended. Add the wet ingredients to the dry ingredients, stirring until just combined.

4.   Preheat a Belgian-style waffle iron. Lightly coat it with cooking spray. Add enough batter to cover about two-thirds of the surface (about 2/3 cup); distribute evenly with a spatula. Close and cook until golden brown, 4 to 5 minutes. Transfer the waffles to the baking sheet to keep warm until ready to serve; do not stack. Repeat with the remaining batter, using more cooking spray as needed. Warm the cherry sauce over medium heat until hot and bubbling; serve with the waffles.

May 2010 Elections

"Therefore  give  to  Your

servant  an  understanding

heart  to  judge  Your  people,

that  I  may  discern  between

good  and  evil.  For  who  is

able  to  judge  this  great

people  of  Yours?"

 (I Kings 3:9)

This prayer comes to mind as the May 2010 elections is coming... We are once again given the chance to choose... Our faith is in our hands... May the Good Lord grant us a peaceful and honest election plus the heart and the mind for us citizens to choose leaders who are not only able but also faithful and true to this nation.

A Painted House

"Until that September of 1952, Luke Chandler had never kept a secret or told a single lie. But in the long hot summer of the seventh year, two groups of migrant workers and two very dangerous men came through the Arkansas Delta to work the Chandler cotton farm..."

so goes the famous author John Grisham's novel "A Painted House" Powerful, intriguing, captivating and obviously one of his best creations as a suspense writer. Luckily it is one of our very few  John Grisham collection of novels.
